My First Pinewood Derby
What is a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby?
Cub Scout Pack 553’s annual Pinewood Derby takes place in March. This is when Cub Scouts have an adult help them build a custom car from a kit. The kit contains the body, wheels, nails for axles, and weights. Entry rules also dictate the weight each car can weigh.

The rules do not dictate customizations so long as they do not interfere with other drivers.
Building the Car
I painted my car bright green. My dad helped me add the axles and wheels after the paint dried. I also added a flashing red dome light on the top of the car!
A friend made me two labels with my HAM call sign on them for my license plates. He also made me a label with my name on it, which I put on top of the car. Now everyone knows the car is MINE.
There were a lot of cars there at the race. In the heats that my car was in, it usually came in second. It came in first a few times.
My pack made trophies for the top three contestants this year.
While I didn’t place in the top three, I placed fourth. Despite this, I had a lot of fun building the car with my dad!
