Guided Setup Option

March 2025 Kelly H. Milligan

The Guided Setup Option is a practical service for collectors who have acquired a limited edition print and want to display it properly. It is not about decoration advice in a general sense — it is about the specific decisions that come with owning a gelatin silver photograph on fibre-based paper.

Most prints in this catalogue are unmounted and unframed when they leave the studio. That is deliberate: it keeps shipping safe and lets you choose the framing that suits your space. But it also means you have to think about glazing, mounting boards, and whether to use a mat at all. This option walks you through those choices with someone who knows the work.

The session covers three things. First, we look at the paper stock and its response to light — fibre-based prints need UV-protective glazing, and we will explain why standard glass is not enough. Second, we discuss mounting: hinging versus dry-mounting, and what each does to the print's longevity. Third, we talk about placement — not in a decorative sense, but in terms of light exposure, humidity, and how the image reads from different distances.

You will receive a written summary after the session, with recommendations specific to the print you own. There is no obligation to use a particular framer, and the advice is practical rather than prescriptive. If you already have a frame in mind, bring the measurements — we can work with what you have.

This option is available for any print in the current catalogue, including the industrial heritage series and the urban landscape studies. It is a one-time session, usually forty-five minutes, conducted over a video call or by phone if you prefer. The goal is straightforward: to help you hang the work with confidence, without guesswork.

To arrange a session, contact the studio directly. Please have your print's edition number and title ready — that helps us pull the correct technical notes before we talk.

Selected Works from the Archive

Series I — Industrial Memory, 2019 Grainy monochrome photo of an abandoned textile mill with broken looms

The Last Mill: Yorkshire Textile Ruins

Medium format negatives from a mill that closed in 1983. The prints emphasise peeling paint, rusted machinery and the quiet light that still falls through broken roof slates.

Series II — Street Geometry, 2021 Black and white study of brickwork patterns and cast iron railings in Manchester

Vernacular Facades of Manchester

Two years of walking the back streets, recording repetitive terraced rhythms and cast-iron details. Each image is printed on fibre-based paper with full archival washing.

Series III — Darkroom Notes, 2022 Close-up of gelatin silver prints drying in a darkroom with tongs and trays

Silver and Shadow: Printing Practice

A documented look at the gelatin silver process — paper selection, development chemistry and the careful dodging that gives each edition its tonal range.

Series IV — Public Spaces, 2023 Monochrome photograph of a concrete underpass with geometric shadows

Underpasses and Overlooked Corners

An essay on the spaces between buildings — underpasses, service yards and empty lots. The work questions how public land holds memory after industry leaves.
